Review: WordPress 2 Visual Quickstart Guide Print E-mail

ImageBlogging is the big success story on the web in recent times and one of the more popular tools available is WordPress 2.

WordPress 2 allows anyone to set up their own blog and provides a range of tools and features as well as a number of extensions to allow them to produce great results with minimal effort.

To help people get to grips with WordPress 2, Maria Langer and Miraz Jordan have produced a new book that aims to provide all the important information but in a non-technical way that should be usable by anyone wanting to get their thoughts online.

Some of the more technical areas a little brief
The book starts by covering the various access options such as an account at www.wordpress.com, using a third party hosting company or hosting on your own server. Most people would be happy with wordpress.com but if you want to use your own domain name then you'll need one of the other options. The admin panels and dashboard along with the various option settings are covered well with concise descriptions that cover all the bases without getting bogged down in too much detail.

The authors then progress logically enough through adding content in various ways, moderating and accounts. There are some useful warnings and pointers to help avoid any of the more common gotchas and after reading these sections, you'll be up and running nicely.

Rather bravely things then move on to themes and how to edit them. This involves getting down and dirty with some of the php files and the book takes the neat approach of showing complete code sections with the bits you ought to edit coloured differently to those you shouldn't. This allows the reader to make changes without any real understanding of the PHP language upon which WordPress is built. Dangerous? Maybe but we feel you shouldn't go too far wrong as long as you follow the instructions. The all important The Loop is discussed in some detail. This is the mechanism that gets and displays the content for each page. The authors also cover the other primary files responsible for outputting the look and content of each page. Importantly they also note the need for setting file permissions correctly and show how most ISPs are likely to allow you to change them to ensure the safety of your site from hackers or the system itself being unable to run its own files.

A range of plugins, blogging tools and other content options such as Google ads and posting your own photos are all examined in the same clear yet concise way. Here you can read about alternative editors, site statistics and more. The authors suggest both PC and Mac solutions in most cases so in that respect the book is agnostic which is good news.

The more brave souls can expand in to Podcasting, RSS feeds and more in the final chapter. We would imagine most readers would be avoiding Podcasts unless they have very high bandwidth limits available to them as a successful site can start getting very expensive in that respect.

The appendices cover online resources, FTP and alternative editors. We thought the online resource section was particularly welcome for new users with lots of pointers to useful information and add ons.

Conclusion
WordPress 2 Visual Quickstart Guide is a great book. It provides a good introduction to WordPress 2 and provides all the essential information without getting too bogged down in details. There are plenty of illustrations, often with the important sections highlighted. WordPress 2 Visual Quickstart Guide rarely gets technical and should be useful to pretty much anyone who can find their computers' on/off switch. Whilst a lot of the content is available online, having it all in one place combined with the additional tips, notes and background information is well worth the asking price.
